ABOUT THE BIRDING

Sorata is a sleep town in the highlands northeast of the capital city of La Paz. It's situated at the base of Mt Illampu. Little native vegetation remains near the town. The main attraction is the endemic Berlepsch's Canastero, which is sometimes easy to find and other times not. The best time of year to see it is dry season (June-September) in patches of Eucalyptus trees along the main road a few kilometers before the town. The same site is also very good for the endemic Black-hooded Sunbeam. Another specialty, the Bolivian Spinetail, has not been recorded there during the past decade. There is good birding en route to Sorata from La Paz, especially for aquatic birds in roadside ponds.

LOCATION OF SITE

The town of Sorata is 148km (3½ hours) northeast of La Paz.
