ABOUT THE BIRDING

The Apa Apa Ecological Reserve is one of the best sites for middle-elevation montane birds of the Yungas in Bolivia. The forest has recently been somewhat degraded with larger trees cut down and the edges of the forest are now closer to agricultural lands. Even so, the forest in mainly virgin, unlike most other accessible YYungas forests in the La Paz region, which have been logged and are now mostly second growth. Access is a bit difficult due to increased traffic, which now produces some traffic noise in the reserve. Most birding is done from the road through the forest or from the Portugal family hacienda. Both have very little traffic at this time. The site is important as the only place in Bolivia where Scimitar-winged Piha is frequently seen.

LOCATION OF SITE

The Apa Apa Reserve is located 117km a bit north and mostly west of La Paz in central Bolivia. Driving time is nearly 4 hours due to traffic conditions along highways 3 and 25. The South Yungas Road from the village of Chulumani is quite steep-edged and requires and experienced driver.
