ABOUT THE BIRDING

Lomas de Arena Municipal Park is often the first stop on Bolivian birding tours. The park is located in the town of Santa Cruz, and the birdlife is constantly in flux. The usual daily count is around 60-80 species. The park is a stopover fro migrant birds passing to or from Argentina as well as a wintering site for North American and Austral migrants. Dry season is May to September. Strong wings are frequently an issue due to the openness of the park. Birding is mainly along the single entrance road. The park opens at 7:00am but the guard who sleeps in the gate office has typically been ok with opening the gate earlier at first light. Most of the park is private land and fenced with barbed wire to keep the cattle from wandering. A 4x4 vehicle should be used for access as the entrance road is not paved and has deep sand in parts, along with ponds and small rivers that need to be crossed. Among the interesting birds are Red-winged Tinamou, White-bellied Nothura, White-woodpecker, an austral migrant, Hudson's Black-Tyrant, also an austral migrant, spectacled Tyrant, and the rare Black-throated Saltator.
