ABOUT THE BIRDING

The Chapare Road provides an altitudinal transect down the east slope of the Bolivian Andes, beginning outside Cochabamba at an altitude of 3800m and descending to the villand of Villa Tunari at and altitude of 500m. It travels through upper montane (above 2600m), middle montane (1600-2600m), upper tropical (900-1600m), and hill tropical (500-900m) habitats. The hill tropical region around Villa Tunari has been seriously degraded and birding at that elevation is poor. The key birding sites along the road are Tables Monte, Miguelito, the Lower Chapare Road, Carrasoc National Park Road, and the grounds of Hotel El Puente in Villa Tunari.

LOCATION OF SITE

The Chapare Road starts in Cochabamba and leads to Villa Tunari in the lowlands. Cochabamba is located in the Bolivian Andes 380km southeast of La Paz, about a 7 hour drive from La Paz.
