ABOUT THE BIRDING
Los Volcanes is a private reserve and lodge located on the edge of Amboro National Park in central Bolivia. The habitat is a variable mix of deciduous forest on the driest slopes to nearly evergreen forest in the humid, south-facing canyon. There are three main birding routes. The entrance road offers excellent birding through deciduous dry forest. The road is steeply downhill so it's best to be dropped off at the top of the road and bird downwards. In addition, there are two trails through the humid valley. The Loro Trail leads upwards to three lookouts and offers an altitudinal forest transect. The River Trail follows the river through the valley, crossing the river 8 times, and is the best place to look for understory species.
LOCATION OF SITE
Los Volcanes Reserve is located along the road to Semaipata in the southwest Cochabamba region of central Bolivia. It's about 2 hours (68km) southwest of Santa Cruz de la Sierra. The access road is just before the town of Bermejo and is extremely steep. To actually reach the reserve one must have a reservation and be transferred by a local driver from the lodge.
