ABOUT THE BIRDING

Ikh Bogd Mountain is the highest peak in Mongolia, rising to 12,982 ft. The peak is bare rock. The southern and northern foothills are surrounded by semi-arid desert. South-facing slopes have many wide, open valleys while north-facing slopes are steeper and have narrow, steep valleys. The main vegetation at middle elevations is subalpine grassy meadows. There are some alpine lakes created by the major earthquake of December 1957. The main attractions on Ikh Bogd are higher elevation birds such as Altai Snowcock, a variety of vultures, eagles, and falcons, Eurasian Eagle-Owl, Barred Warbler, White-winged Redstart, Black Redstart, Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush, Alpine Accentor, Altai Accentor, Brown Accentor, Mongolian Accentor, Water Pipit, Mongolian Finch, Asian Rosy-Finch, Godlewski's Bunting, and Gray-necked Bunting. A variety of mammals are also present including Snow Leopard, rare and very unlikely to be seen there, Gray Wolf, Siberian Ibex, and Argali.
