ABOUT THE BIRDING

Arvaikheer is a town in central Mongolia, a typical layover site for birdig tours to Mongolia. Tours usually camp outside the town because the few suitable hotels are very expensive. The town is situated near the central and eastern extent of the Khangain Mountains of central Mongolia and at the western edge of the vast steppe grassland of eastern Mongolia. Birds in this region are generally widely distributed, but Oriental Plover is the main target species as it is a quite localized breeder in Mongolia. Also possible is Saxaul Sparrow, which is mainly a Gobi Desert species and most often seen at Khongoryn Els.

LOCATION OF SITE

Arvaikheer town is located in central Mongolia about 430km southwest of Ulaanbaatar, 6 hours by car.
