ABOUT THE BIRDING

Hustai National Park, also known as Khustain Nuruu National Park, is a special protected area established after Przewalski's Horse was reintroduced. The park extends through the Khentii Mountains and includes the western edge of the Mongolian Steppe, so the habitat is a combination of arid mountains and foothills along with grassland. The Tuul River runs through the park. Key birds of interest in the park are Black Grouse, Daurian Partridge, Japanese Quail, and Thick-billed Warbler. Other notable species include Demoiselle Crane, Bearded Vulture, Steppe Eagle, Upland Buzzard, Little Owl, Amur Falcon, Saker Falcon, Red-billed Chough, Mongolian Short-toed Lark, Pallas's Leaf Warbler, Red-throated Thrush, Ref-flanked Bluetail, Pere David's Snowfinch, Godlewski's Bunting, and Gray-necked Bunting. Numerous waterfowl and shorebirds either nest in the park or are present during migration.
