ABOUT THE BIRDING

Yolyn Am is a scenic gorge in the eastern Gobi Altai Mountain range near the eastern extent of the Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia. Yol is Mongolian for Lammergeir, which is possible in the area. A 3km trail up the gorge on fairly flat land leads to an icefield. The nearby Flaming Cliffs offer stunning desert scenery when the light is right. The main target species in the area are Mongolian Accentor, Himalayan Beautiful Rosefinch, and Godlewski's Bunting. The much desired Altai Snowcock is possible but rare. A variety of other desert raptors and passerines are also present in the gorge. A few mammals are also present, including Snow Leopards, which are rarely seen there.
