Madagascar is a spectacular tour destination that makes up for the relatively small number of bird species with the high number of endemics. In addtion, it is a special place to visit because it's the only place in the world to see lemurs. Our short pre-tour to the unique southeastern corned of the island is notable for its lemur species and the recently rediscovered Red-tailed Newtonia.
The tour begins with a two hour flight from the capital city of Antananarivo to the port town of Fort Dauphin. We'll have some time that afternoon for birding around town. We depart early next morning for Andohahela National Park, a 50-60 km drive along a rough and sometimes muddy road that takes 2-3 hours. Morning birding a rainforest trail in the park to look for the newtonia and other species. Then continue to the private Berenty Reserve. After arrival, some afternoon and nocturnal birding in the reserve. All next day birding in the Berenty Reserve. After some early birding the next morning, drive back to Fort Dauphin for an afternoon flight to Antananarivo.
TOUR NOTES
Price does not include roundtrip flight between Antananarivo and Fort Dauphin (€300) or lunch and dinner at Fort Dauphin (estimated at €50/day). Tour is priced in euros with exchange rate to dollars applied at time of payment.
