Three-wattled Bellbird - © James F Wittenberger and Exotic Birding LLCOur short birding excursion to Monteverde and La Ensenada in northwestern Costa Rica is an extension to our Costa Rica Hotspots tour. This short tour offers exceptional birding at Selvatura, best place for seeing Three-wattled Bellbirds, Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve where numerous hummingbirds and forest species can be found, and La Ensenada where numerous birds of open country and dry woodland at lower elevations are located. This tour is intended for those persons taking our Costa Rica Hotspots tour who would like to visit the internationally renowned destination at Monteverde.

Tour Considerations

PACE - The pace of this tour is easy.

DIFFICULTY - Birding at Monteverde is along forest trails. Some trails are flat with not much incline while others are moderately steep. Birding at Selva Verde entails a bit of uphill to reach the canopy walkway, where most of the birding occurs. Birding at La Ensenada is along relatively flat trails through arid scrub.

CLIMATE - Rainy season is during May-June and September-November. A mini dry season occurs during July-August. Temperatures in the lowlands are generally warm but comfortable and more moderate in the middle elevation around Monteverde.

BIRD ACTIVITY - Breeding activity of birds in Costa Rica is best from December through April. The mini dry season during July and August can also be good for birding as well.

PHOTOGRAPHY - Photo opportunities at bird feedersoutside the entrance to Monteverde Cloud Forest preserve is quite good but mostly in a shady area. Photography along the Selvaverde canopy walkway offers good opportunities to photograph canopy birds such as the Three-wattled Bellbird and tanagers.
