The Amazon headwaters of the Napo River in eastern Ecuador is a magical place offering excellent birding opportunities. We consider Sacha Lodge to be one of the best places to base a tour there. The lodge offers excellent accommodations, birding on the private reserve around the lodge is superb, and the canopy walkway and observation tower are great for viewing canopy birds. Our birding guide is known as one of the best in the region. This tour option is designed to be a pre-tour or extension to one of our other Ecuador birding tours but can also be taken by itself. One night of hotel in Quito is included in the price, either before or after the tour as desired. We can arrange for any additional nights at the same hotel for additional charge. Rain is possible at any time in the Amazon, but weather is generally better during the dry season from July-December.

The lodge is reached by a flight to Coca from Quito followed by motorized boat trip along the Napo River. Upon disembarking you'll walk a boardwalk to the lodge with porters carrying your luggage. During your stay you'll visit two parrot clay licks, take dugout boat trips through seasonally flooded forest, and walk trails through the rainforest, all the while viewing birds and other animals you encounter. You'll have the opportunity to climb the observation tower and walk the suspended canopy walkway to view birds of the forest canopy. You can expect to see many macaws and parrots as well as forest birds such as antbirds, flycatchers, and tanagers.
