ABOUT THE BIRDING

Bach Ma National Park encompasses an area of steep mountain slopes covered by evergreen forest, with some tropical forest below 900m. The lowlands have been extensively cleared and replaced by scrub and grassland. One main trail is the Rhododendron Trail, beginning 2km below the summit and ending at the top of a waterfall. From there a steep trail of concrete steps leads down to the bottom of the cliff 300m below. The other main trail is the Pheasant Trail, which starts 5km from the park entrance and leads through lower elevation evergreen forest to a series of waterfalls. This is the best trail for finding galliforms such as the difficult Argus Pheasant and Silver Pheasant as well as most other target birds. The rare Blyth's Kingfisher is possible along the river. There is also good birding along the main road 2-3km downhill from the park headquarters. The area around the summit guesthouses is good for higher elevation species such as Long-tailed Broadbill, Silver-breasted Broadbill, and Sultan Tit.
