ABOUT THE BIRDING

The Huaypo Lakes area located about 30min east of Cusco has become a regular birding destination to complement the Huacarpay Lakes area since the latter has suffered substantial habitat degradation. Huaypo Lakes consists of a larger lake about 3km from Chacan and a smaller lake nearer to the town. The lake is in an open scrub area and is surrounded by bulrushes, mud flats, dry scrub, and open fields. The primary attraction is high elevation water birds such as White-cheeked Pintail, Puna Teal, and White-tufted Grebe. Other notable species include the range-restricted Spot-winged Pigeon, Wren-like Rushbird, and Many-colored Rush Tyrant.

LOCATION OF SITE

Huaypo Lake is located about 3km from the village of Chacan between Ollantaytambo and Cusco.
