ABOUT THE BIRDING
Fundo Alto Nieva is a higher elevation private reserve near Abra Patricia Reserve characterized by white-sand soil and mossy stunted forest. The site is accessed via a 10-min hike to the main station, which serves as a campsite, and an additional 10-min hike to the feeders. This site is the best place to find the prized Royal Sunangel and is also an excellent place to look for the endangered and highly localized Long-whiskered Owl. Both Royal Sunangel and the infrequently seen Greenish Puffleg frequent the feeders in the reserve. The owlet is normally looked for along a fairly easy 1km long trail where a couple territories are located.
LOCATION OF SITE
Fundo Alto Nieva is a relatively new birding site located 20 minutes east of Abra Patricia Reserve on the eastern Andes slope of northern Peru.
