Finca Hartmann is a farm that has been left partly fallow and is reverting back to forest. The owners are concerned about disappearing habitat and wish to make their farm available for research and birding groups. The land is used primarily for growing shade-grown coffee under towering remnant rainforest trees, with some land still covered by highland cloud forest. Several dirt roads provide access to areas ranging in elevation from 4000-6000 ft, thus providing a good altitudinal gradient for birding. Christmas bird counts on the finca yield nearly 200 species, and over 280 species have been recorded in total. Birding on the premises involves mostly easy walking and roadside birding along the dirt roads, although some trails go up the altitudinal gradient. The finca is one of the best places to see Fiery-billed Aracari in western Panama. It's also a good place to see Resplendent Quetzal.
