ABOUT THE BIRDING

Daan Viljoen Game Park is the closest place to Windhoek for game viewing. The reserve is in the hill area of Khomas Hochland and is mainly Acacia scrub with grassland that turns green during rainy season and yellow during dry season. The park has many walking paths, and tourists are free to explore on foot as dangerous predators are absent. The reserve features several interesting Kalahari bird species such as Red-billed Francolin, Red-crested Bustard, Rufous-crowned Roller, Common Scimitar-bill, Monteiro's Hornbill, Sabota Lark, Ashy Tit, Short-toed Rock-Thrush, Great Rufous Sparrow, Red-billed Buffalo-Weaver, and Red-headed Finch. A number of medium-sized game animals are also present including Blue Wildebeest, Oryx, Red Hartebeest, and Giraffe. It's also possible to sometimes find the endangered Hartmann's Mountain Zebra.
