The best itinerary for a first birding tour to Ecuador includes both western and eastern slopes of the northern Andes. A tour that visits only one slope or the other will miss many species found exclusively on just one side of the mountains. About two weeks is an ideal duration for a birding tour to this part of Ecuador. Less time means we wouldn't be able to visit all the important altitudinal zones on both slopes. November is an excellent time for a tour as it precedes the heaviest rains on the western slope, which usually begin in December, and birds are active at that time of year on both sides of the Andes.
