ABOUT THE BIRDING

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a vast protected area within the Kalahari Desert of central Botswana. A network of roads provide access. 4-wheel-drive vehicles are essential. It was established to protect the living space of the Kung Bushmen. The best time to visit is shortly after the summer rains arrive, which occur most but not all years between November and March. During this time thousands of animals such as gemsbok, springbok, giraffe, eland, kudu, wildebeest, and warthogs roam the plains. Many predators and scavengers are in attendance including Brown Hyena, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, African Wild Dog, Bat-eared Fox, and jackals. Over 350 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve, which offers some of the best birding in Botswana during this time of year. Night drives to view nocturnal animals including predators on the prowl can be arranged through the various lodges on private lands adjacent to the reserve.

LOCATION OF SITE

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve can be reached by regularly scheduled flights to Maun or Gabarone. From there it's reached by road via the A3, with the shortest distance being from Maun.
