BIRDING BOLIVIA

Bolivia is a much less visited country but offers some very productive biring with over 1480 species recorded, including over 150 endemic and near endemic species. It's a land-locked country with diverse geography that includes the high Andes, middle elevation plateaus and valleys, Amazonian lowlands, and dry chaco desert. The country has had some unstable politics that has in the past affected visitors, but it is normally a safe country to visit. Birding Bolivia is an adventurous undertaking, especially in the Beni region to the north, the Chaco region in the southeast, along the Old Coroico Road outside La Paz, and in the Apolo region north of La Paz.

To fully experience Bolivia, either a very long single tour or two separate tours are necessary. It's possible to cover much of the country in a three-week tour if the Chaco region and the far northern part of the Beni region are left out. More extensive coverage is best done with two separate two-week tours, one covering eastern Bolivia including the northern Beni region and southern Chaco region, with the other covering central Bolivia and the higher altitude Andes of the northwest around La Paz. Less visited is the Apolo region north of La Paz, which involves some long drives, more basic accommodations, and longer hikes. This region features a number of special birds, most notably the recently described Inti Tanager and the endemic Palkachupa Cotinga, which is currently consiered a subspecies of the Swallow-tailed Cotinga but a likely future split.
