Description of Lamanai Archaeological Site

The well-excavated archaeological site at Lamanai is one of the largest in Belize and was one of the last Mayan sites occupied. It was a major trading center until some time in the mid 17th century. Aside from fabulous Mayan ruins, the site offers excellent birding opportunities. Over 400 species have been recorded in a variety of habitats, including wetlands, broadleaf forest, pine savanna, scrub, and riverine environments.
