Panama is a superb place to see and photograph a wide variety of tropical birds and monkeys. We'll spend the first 4 days of the tour making photographs birds and other subject matter in the Canal Zone following by 4 days making photographs in the highlands of western Panama.
While in the Canal Zone, we'll spend two full days making photographs of birds in Soberania National Park. This park is famous among birding circles as one of the best places in the world to see tropical birds and offers numerous opportunities to make photographs of them as well. Among the possibilities are 5 species of trogons, 3 species of motmots, 3 species of puffbirds, and a wide variety of songbirds. Our guide is an expert at finding and identifying these birds and will help us greatly in finding opportunities to make photographs. We'll also visit Miraflores Locks on the west end of the Panama Canal where we can photograph ships going through the locks.
We'll spend an additional two days making visiting and making photographs on the Caribbean side of the Canal Zone. Our lodge there has gardens and several feeders that attract a variety of hummingbirds we can photograph. Among these are Western Long-tailed Hermit, Green-crowned Woodnymph, and Blue-chested Hummingbird. The Caribbean side of the Canal features a variety of birds not present on the Pacific side, lending itself to new photo opportunities. Some of the birds we may see and photograph are Amazonian White-tailed Trogon, Black-tailed Trogon, Collared Aracari, Keel-billed Toucan, and a variety of manakins, tanagers, and other songbirds.
In western Panama our primary goal is to see and photograph Resplendent Quetzals, one of the world's most spectacular birds. The western highlands also feature a wide variety of other photogenic birds that are found only there and neighbording southern Costa Rica. Some of the possibilities include Orange-bellied and Baird's Trogons, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, and a wide variety of tanagers, brush-finches, and other colorful songbirds.
