Resplendent Quetzal as seen in Costa Rica - © Laura L Fellows and Exotic Birding toursThe ranges of many Central American and South American birds overlap in the narrow isthmus of Panama, thereby creating some extraordinary birding opportunities in the country. Our tour to the Panama Canal Zone and western Chiriqui Province visits many of the best birding locales in Panama. Areas covered in the Canal Zone include famed Pipeline Road and other locales in Soberania National Park, plus Achiote Road on the Caribbean side of the isthmus. The tour also visits the western Chiriqui highlands where many endemics and higher elevation specialties are found, including Resplendent Quetzals and Three-wattled Bellbirds.

Our tour to the Panama Canal Zone only is a shortened version of our Panama Highlights tour for those who cannot go on the longer tour. It covers Pipeline Road, Soberania National Park, and Achiote Road in central Panama but ends in Panama City while those taking the longer tour continue on to the Chiriqui Highlands.

During our week in the Canal Zone we'll be exploring the rich variety of birds found in the Panama lowlands. Many of these are not found farther north in Costa Rica. Likely highlights include Great Jacamar, Spot-crowned Barbet, White-ruffed Manakin, Band-rumped Swift, White-whiskered Puffbird, Red-crowned Woodpecker, White-flanked Antwren, Ocellated Antbird, Bare-crowned Antbird, Streak-chested Antpitta, Blue Cotinga, Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, the endemic Yellow-green Tyrannulet, Golden-collared Manakin, Flame-rumped Tanager, Saffron Finch, Black-headed Saltator, and Red-breasted Blackbird. In the western highlands of Chiriqui Province we'll be seeking a variety of birds not found in the Canal Zone. Likely possibilities include Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Resplendent Quetzal, Red-headed Barbet, Black-and-yellow Silky-Flycatcher, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Flame-throated Warbler, Large-footed Finch, Yellow-throated Brush-Finch, and Black-thighed Grosbeak.
