Eastern Andes form of Andean Cock-of-the-Rock in Ecuador - © Laura L Fellows and Exotic Birding toursOur 2008 birding tour to central Peru visits one of the most bird-rich places on Earth, namely the Manu Biosphere Reserve. This reserve, along with the Manu Road leading to the reserve from Cusco, encompasses an altitudinal gradient and lowland rainforest that is home to some 1000 species of birds. The tour is led by Lelis Navarette, well known as one of the truly elite birding guides in South America.

During the tour we'll spend three nights at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge at a middle elevation site along the Manu Road. There we'll visit a Cock-of-the-Rock lek to view the extraordinary displays of this beautiful bird. We'll also spend three nights at the Amazonia Lodge, located farther downslope, considered one of Peru's top birding locales. From there we'll take a boat ride into the Peruvian Amazon, arriving at the Manu Biosphere Reserve after a full day of birding en route. At Manu we'll visit the world famous Blanquillo Macaw Lick, where we'll observe several species of macaws and parrots gathering clay that they use to detoxify fruits in their diet. We'll spend four full days at the biosphere reserve, looking for lowland rainforest birds in seasonally flooded varzea forest, terra firme forest, bamboo forest, and other habitats. It will be an amazing birding adventure to one of the world's most bird-rich destinations.

This tour is being offered in conjunction with a well-known birding tour company in Ecuador, who is arranging all logistics and providing guide services. The tour price is the same whether you book through us or through them. For that reason, payment by credit card will incur an additional service charge to cover processing costs.
