Giant Hummingbird in the high Andes - © Neblina Forest - Presented by Exotic Birding toursOur 2008 birding tour to the famed archaeological site at Machu Picchu combined with birding in the neighboring mountains of Abra Malaga is designed to be either a pre-tour that can be combined with our tour to Manu Biosphere Reserve or as a stand-alone tour. The tour is led by Lelis Navarette, well known as one of the truly elite birding guides in South America.

The birding around Machu Picchu features numerous endemics and specialty birds restricted to the central Andes that we won't see along the Manu Road. Among these are Green-and-white Hummingbird, Ocellated Piculet, Sclater's Tyrannulet, Mottle-cheeked Tyrannulet, and Inca Wren at Machu Picchu and White-tufted Sunbeam, Royal Cinclodes, Creamy-crested Spinetail, White-browed Tit-Spinetail, Tawny Tit-Spinetail, Rusty-fronted Canastero, Junin Canastero, Cusco Brush-Finch, and Chestnut-breasted Mountain-Finch in Abra Malaga. We'll also be looking for a variety of other high elevation specialties such as Giant Hummingbird, Blue-mantled Thornbill, White-winged Cinclodes, Stripe-headed Antpitta, Andean Tapaculo, and Thick-billed Siskin. At Huacarpay Lakes, located about 20 miles from Cusco, we'll find a variety of high elevation waterbirds such as Puna Ibia, Puna Teal, Puna Plover and others. We'll also take a guided archaeological tour of Machu Picchu ruins, last stronghold of the Incas. Seeing the ruins is ample reason to visit the region, but that along with spectacular birding makes this a must-do tour for every birder who visits Peru.

This tour is being offered in conjunction with a well-known birding tour company in Ecuador, who is arranging all logistics and providing guide services. The tour price is the same whether you book through us or through them. For that reason, payment by credit card will incur an additional service charge to cover processing costs.
