We can arrange for a visit to Cristalino Lodge in the southern Amazon Basin at the beginning or end of any of our Brazil tours subject to availability. Please call for more information.
Brazil is a vast and extraordinary country that cannot be covered in one tour. Our Brazil birding tour covers some of the best birding destinations in the south, where a large number of endemics are found in remnant forests and in the interior. It covers some excellent remnant forest reserves near Ubatuba, north of Sao Paulo, fabulous Itatiaia National Park between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, and the water wonderland of the Pantanal, the world's largest wetland. The tour is scheduled for late August in the midst of the dry season to maximize our changes for success. The often cloudy and rainy mountain escarpments between Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro should have good weather, and the Pantanal should be dried out enough that birds will be concentrated mostly in areas of permanent water. Unlike many other birding tours to Brazil, domestic flights within Brazil are included in our tour price.
The Southeast Atlantic Forest area of Brazil offers superb opportunities for seeing endemic and often highly endangered birds of this very threatened ecosystem. Near Ubatuba we'll bird in a protected forest reserve and visit a private residence where the owner maintains several hummingbird feeders. There we'll be able to view up to a dozen species of Brazilian hummingbirds, including several endemics. En route to Itatiaia National Park we'll visit a locale near Pereque that is the only known place to see the highly endangered Black-hooded Antwren. Itatiaia National Park itself offers two main altitudinal zones, each with its own set of specialty birds. We'll visit both.
The Pantanal is a vast wetland, and we'll be birding the northern end of the region. The long, mainly unpaved but fairly smooth access road offers excellent opportunities to view the numerous wetland birds including a variety of specialty birds of the Pantanal. Certainly one of the highlights will be the beautiful and unfortunately endangered Hyacinth Macaw. At both lodges where we stay, trails through woodland habitats give us an opportunity to see the many specialty land birds found in the Pantanal. During our visit we'll also see other wildlife, including many caimans and a variety of mammals. The Chapada dos Guimaraes is a dry canyonland habitat north of Cuiaba. Our short stay there offers us a chance to see specialty birds of the dry cerrado habitat of Brazil.
Our Brazil tour is divided into two segments. Those wanting a shorter tour can go to the SE Atlantic Forest area only or they can visit the Pantanal and Chapada areas only. For those wishing to combine part or all of our tour with a visit to Cristolino Lodge in the southern Amazon, we can make all necessary arrangements for you once you have registered for our tour. The lodge offers excellent local guide services. We charge a $100 handling fee for this service.
