Upper Loreto Road & Guacamayos Ridge
Subtropical Zone of Eastern Andes
Ecuador Birding Destination

The Loreto Road is a famed birding area as it transitions from the Amazonian Lowlands Biozone uphill through the Subtropical Zone and ultimately to paramo in the 13,500 ft high Papallacta Pass. Hence, it offers a fantastic altitudinal transect featuring a great diversity of bird species present on the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains.

The upper Loreto Road and Guacamayos Ridge encompass subtropical areas at middle elevations on the eastern slope of the Andes. A variety of trails through the forests covering this ridge provide great birding access. On clear days the views to Sumaco Volano and the Upper Amazon Basin are awesome.
