Panama is a geographical dividing line where the ranges of many Central American birds end and the ranges of many South American birds begin. Nearly 200 species of birds found in Panama are not present in Costa Rica. The ranges of additional species extend only into southern Costa Rica and are missed on typical Costa Rica birding tours. For this reason Panama has become an increasingly popular birding destination, even for those who have already participated in a birding tour to Costa Rica.
Our Panama Highlights birding tour visits many of the best birding locales in the Panama Canal Zone and western Chiriqui Province. Areas covered on our tour include famed Pipeline Road, Plantation Trail, and Old Gamboa Road in Soberania National Park, Achiote Road and nearby areas on the Caribbean side of the Canal Zone, and a variety of higher elevation sites in the western Chiriqui highlands where many near endemics and specialty birds can be found. Those wanting a shorter tour can participate in the Canal Zone segment of the tour without continuing on to the western highlands for a reduced price.
During our week in the Canal Zone we'll explore the rich variety of birds found in the Panama lowlands. Many of these are not found farther north in Costa Rica. Highlights we have seen on previous tours include Harpy Eagle, Great Jacamar, Spot-crowned Barbet, White-ruffed Manakin, Band-rumped Swift, White-whiskered Puffbird, Red-crowned Woodpecker, White-flanked Antwren, Ocellated Antbird, Bare-crowned Antbird, Streak-chested Antpitta, Blue Cotinga, Sulphur-rumped Flycatcher, the endemic Yellow-green Tyrannulet, Golden-collared Manakin, Flame-rumped Tanager, Saffron Finch, Black-headed Saltator, and Red-breasted Blackbird. Specialty birds we have seen in the western highlands of Chiriqui Province include Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Resplendent Quetzal, Red-headed Barbet, Black-and-yellow Silky-Flycatcher, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Flame-throated Warbler, Large-footed Finch, Yellow-throated Brush-Finch, and Black-thighed Grosbeak.
