Our photo tour of northern Costa Rica seeks out a broad spectrum of birds and other animals as our subject matter. We'll be visiting a variety of middle elevation and lower elevation locales in northwestern and central regions of the country. We'll visit world-famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, take a boat trip through the wetlands of Palo Verde National Park, and explore transitional lowland forest at Carara National Park where the ranges of northern and southern species converge and overlap. We should have good opportunities to photograph Jabiru, possibly Resplendent Quetzal and Scarlet Macaw, a variety of hummingbirds, many other bird species, and some mammals including Black-mantled Howler Monkey. Our tour is led by nature photographer Laura Fellows and is accompanied by an expert Costa Rican birding guide who will assist in finding and identifying the many bird species we'll see and photograph.
Monteverde is something of a tourist town, but up the road is a wildlife preserve that was established with the help of World Wildlife Fund in the 1970's. Here we can expect to find many interesting birds to photograph, including possibly Black Guan, several trogon species, tanagers, and other birds. Feeders near the entrance offer excellent opportunities for photographing hummingbirds as they display, fight over perches, and display. We also frequently see the beautiful Resplendent Quetzal near the entrance this time of year and hope to have good opportunities to photograph it.
Paloverde National Park protects a vast wetland where Jabiru, many herons and egrets, hawks, monkeys and other animals can be seen and photographed. Our full day boat trip into this water wonderland is always a highlight of our tour and provides numerous opportunities to photograph birds and wildlife.
Finally, Carara National Park along the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica offers a splendid variety of forest habitats from secondary forest to primary rainforest. Carara is one of the top bird-watching destinations in Costa Rica and is a great place for nature photography. Here we'll see and photograph many kinds of forest birds, including trogons, woodpeckers, antbirds, flycatchers, manakins, wrens, and tanagers. We usually see 2-3 species of monkeys and sometimes Coatimundi along the forest trails. Our expert birding guide will be invaluable in finding and identifying birds and mammals for us to photograph during our visit.
