Napo River Lowlands. |
Our Ecuadorian Amazon tour visits the Napo River area of eastern Ecuador. This area is certainly the most visited part of the eastern lowlands of Ecuador and is well set up to offer a superb birding experience. Tour participants can enjoy a sense of remoteness, see numerous specialty birds found only in the Amazon Basin, and still have a comfortable and relaxing experience at one of Ecuador's finest resort hotels. We'll spend one night at an excellent hotel in Quito, then 4 nights at Sacha Lodge near the Napo River, and a final night back in Quito during this tour. We'll have 3 full days of birding in the Amazon plus additional birding opportunitities during transit to and from the lodge.
After a short morning flight from Quito To Coca, we'll take a 2 hour 50 minute powerboat ride down the Napo River. Then we'll walk through varzea (seasonally flooded) forest along a boardwalk, with porters carrying our luggage. We'll have ample opportunity to see monkeys and birds during this walk. We'll then cross a lagoon in dugout canoes to the lodge, situated in a private 2000 hectare reserve adjacent to Yasuni National Park.
During our stay at Sacha Lodge, we'll go birding in the private reserve and nearby Yasuni National Park, covering a variety of habitats including waterways, lagoons, trails through varzea forest, and trails through terra firma forest. We'll spend one morning visiting two famous parrot clay licks, where a variety of parrots come to ingest special mineralized clay they need to aid digestion. We should see 6-7 species of parrots and parakeets at the licks, and we may see other birds along the trail as we walk between the boat dock and the observation areas.
Sacha Lodge also offers excellent opportunities to see canopy level birds. We'll climb the observation tower built in a giant Kapok tree that offers superb views of treetop birds from a platform 135 ft. above the ground. We'll also be able to walk through the forest canopy along a 940-ft walkway suspended about 95 ft above the ground. This unique walkway offers unsurpassed opportunities to see canopy birds at virtually eye level.
