Our Costa Rica Highlights Tour features several of the best birding destinations in Costa Rica. The tour maximizes our birding opportunities by covering Carara National Park near the central Pacific coast, the Caribbean slope around La Selva Biological Station including Braulio Carrillo National Park, and the high Talamanca Mountains where Resplendent Quetzals are most readily seen. We'll be staying at many fine lodges including Savegre Mountain Lodge, Villa Lapas, and Selva Verde, thereby making our tour comfortable as well as productive. We expect to see about 300 species in this compact weekend-to-weekend tour.
Likely highlights of our visit to Carara National Park and the surrounding area include a boat trip on the Rio Tarcoles, Scarlet Macaws flying along the Rio Tarcoles and in the nearby forest, and an incredible diversity of lowland transitional forest birds. Specialty birds we'll be seeking include Black-and-white Owl in Orotina, Black-hooded Antshrike, Black-faced Antthrush, Baird's Trogon, Orange-collared Manakin, Long-tailed Manakin, Black-bellied Wren, and Cherrie's Tanager at Carara. On the Caribbean slope we'll look for Sunbittern along the Rio Sarapiqui, view a variety of hummingbirds including most likely the endemic Coppery-headed Emerald as well as possibly Bronze-tailed Plumeleteer, Snowcap, and Black-crested Coquette and many more common species. We have a good chance of seeing the endangered Great Green Macaw, and we'll enjoy a full day of spectacular birding at La Selva Biological Station where we can expect to see a great diversity of woodpeckers, flycatchers, tanagers, and more. We hope to find harder to see species such as Great Tinamou and Bare-necked Umbrellabird. Finally, we'll visit the high Talamanca Mountains south of San Jose, where we'll enjoy wonderful Savegre Lodge and have great opportunities to see highland specialties such as Resplendent Quetzal, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Collared Redstart, Yellow-thighed Finch, and Volcano Junco. We should also see some high elevation hummingbirds such as Scintillant Hummingbird, Gray-tailed Mountain-Gem, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, and Volcano Hummingbird.
